Questions About the Estimate Process
What is the process to get my roof replaced?
You can click here for a free estimate, call our 800 number, or send an email to the office directly. We will schedule an appointment for a quote. Once a quote is provided and you accept the proposal, we will send you an email to electronically sign your contract.
A date for the installation of your new roof will be tentatively secured. You have 7 days to sign the contract electronically and pick your color to secure that new roof date. We will be in contact with you over the upcoming weeks to ensure that there are no issues with your chosen date, and your project manager will contact you before your start date.
Once your new roof is completed, we will do a walk through of your property and address any concerns and answer any questions. Your warranty booklet will be issued, and payment taken. A yard sign will be placed at the property for about a week. We will come by and pick it up when the project is complete.
Do I have to be home for the estimate?
No, we are more than happy to come by while you are away from your home. We will provide you a quote via email that will provide a detailed breakdown of materials we will use and differences between product options.
Do you provide references?
Yes, we can provide references that best match your project type. We also use past roofs that we have completed to better assist the color selection process. We have found that this gives you a better idea of the appearance of a finished roof, rather than looking at a small section of shingle in a book. We can also send you a nearby address of a home with a roof that includes your top 3 color choices.
Questions About Replacing Your Roof
Is there any supervision during my roof installation?
Every job is supervised from start to finish. We have one main Project Manager on the ground and each job has a foreman on the roof. We care about the consistent quality of all our work and this extra attention to your job enables us to provide you with expert service from start to finish.
How warm does it need to be to shingle my roof?
We prefer to install a new roof when it is at least 45 degrees and sunny outside. This allows the shingles to be pliable enough to lay flat on the roof. It also allows for the caulking and paint to properly adhere to the surfaces. This will ensure that your roof is ready for the elements once we complete the job.
What happens if it rains during my roof installation?
Hampton Roads weather can be unpredictable, so it’s not uncommon for an unexpected rain shower to occur during a roof installation. Your shingles attach to plywood, also known as roof decking. If it rains while this decking is exposed, it will absorb the water and cause swelling. That’s why it is important to cease all work if it begins to rain. We will cover the decking with tarps to avoid water damage to your decking. We will only continue the project once the rain has completely stopped. We work the roofs in sections to be able to cover portions of the roof if the weather does not cooperate. Once the synthetic underlayment has been applied to the roof deck, your house would be considered watertight. At that point, only wind-driven rain would be of concern.
Who will be my contact during the project and how readily accessible will they be?
A project manager will be assigned to your roofing project and will be the primary point of contact should you have any questions during the installation process.
If they are not on-site the moment you have your question, you’ll be able to contact the office via phone or email. There are also crew leaders on-site at all times who can either answer your questions or get the Director of Project Management involved, depending on the nature of the question.
When do I need to pay for my roof?
Once your roofing project has been completed and you have completed a walkthrough with your Project Manager, payment will be due.
Do you take credit cards?
We accept all major cards. There will be a 5% surcharge for each transaction.
Questions About Products & Materials
Why do you use CertainTeed Shingles?
We have done our homework and talked to the manufacturers. We look at the way the material is developed and installed. We have gone through the certification process for all employees in our company. We feel that the CertainTeed brand is one that we can put our name on and stand behind.
Do you install any other brand of shingle?
Yes, we will. We can install Mulehide, GAF, Owens-Corning, Carlisle and many others. The type of roof and design of your structure will determine the best product to protect your home.
Can you just add another layer of shingles to my roof?
The short answer from a professional roofing contractor is: no. You never want to cover an existing roof with another layer of roofing materials. This will significantly increase the possibility of compromising the structural integrity of your house. You will also not be able to see if there is any damage to roof decking. This will promote any soft spots in the roof to worsen.
Shingles also add significant weight to your roof. There are 205-260 pounds of shingles per 100 square feet on your home depending on what type of shingle is installed.
For a shingle roof to be effective it must be laid as flat as possible. An old roof often has lifted, missing, or curled shingles. This will make it impractical to retain the required flatness. With technology improving the roofing system, ice and water shield is required in all valleys and penetrations in the roof deck. This provides an additional layer of protection to the wood and your interior.
Do you use a ridge vent?
Yes, we recommend a ridge vent. However, for some roof and ventilation designs, ridge vents are not the best choice for proper ventilation. We also use static vents, wind turbines, and power fans to supply the attic with the air it requires.
What is flashing?
Flashing is installed over joints, edges, and any other gaps or potential leak points in a roof. Typical flashing is made of aluminum. Copper is another metal used for flashing, which also works as an algae-deterrent. Flashing is also used around chimneys or any roof-to-wall intersection and around roof penetrations (where a pipe or vent goes through the roofing surface).
What is a drip edge?
Drip edge is the metal flashing that protects the edges of your roof, both the eaves and the gable ends (rakes). It helps control the flow of water away from the fascia and protects the underlying roofing components. Drip edge overhangs the sides of the roof and has a small metal flange that is bent away from the fascia to get the water off your roof.
Should I upgrade to seamless gutters?
Seamless gutters provide a clean and uniform look because they are a single piece of aluminum. A seamless gutter can be made up to 100ft in length and only require joints at the edges. Regular gutters are often made in 10ft sections that must be stacked together to make a long, continuous run along your roof.
Since seamless gutters are made from a continuous strip of aluminum there are fewer areas that are prone to failure. Seamless gutters offer a better curb appeal and come in a variety of colors to match your home and style.
Will architectural shingles add value to my home?
The short answer is, yes. Architectural shingles offer a higher wind resistance than standard shingles. This premium feature is necessary in Hampton Roads because the area is susceptible to hurricane-force winds. Furthermore, architectural shingles look better than standard 3-tab shingles due to their added thickness and dimension. This will increase the curb appeal of your home, which will in turn, increase the value of your home.
Questions About Warranty & Repair
What is the warranty on my new roof?
You will receive a 10-year labor and craftsmanship warranty for your new roof from the date of install. After those 10 years, you will be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty for material defects. This manufacturer’s warranty varies by the type of shingle installed. We use a Sure Start system for every shingle roof, and apply 6 nails per shingle which will give you the 110 MPH wind rating on all architectural (dimensional) shingles.
How long is your labor and craftsmanship warranty?
Our labor and craftsmanship warranty is good for 10 years from the date of installation. As long as a tree or branch (or similar items) did not go through your roof, and your roof just developed a leak you are covered by us. Just give us a call. It is always good to retain a copy of your billed invoice after your installation.
How long is a repair warranty good for?
Our repairs are completed in accordance to manufacture specifications. We honor a 1-year-from-date-of-repair warranty against future leaks around the repair.
What does your standard 3-Star Warranty mean?
When you purchase any CertainTeed shingle you automatically get a limited lifetime warranty on the shingle material. You get a 10-year labor and craftsmanship warranty. After the 10-year craftsmanship warranty, the manufacturer is responsible for the material defect and replacement of the roof.
What does your 4 Star Warranty mean?
When you purchase any CertainTeed shingle you automatically get a limited lifetime warranty on the shingle material. The manufacturer is responsible for the labor and craftsmanship warranty, tear off and replacement, and material defect.
